To put it simply, it is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. Can IT Keep Up with AI?

A common thought process is that since all of these inventions and designs are, for now, trade secrets, how can IT keep up with AI? Eventually someone, other than the developer, will need to work on these creations and this will involve further training and education. While some feel that AI will take worker out of the workforce, replacing them with robots, there will be a need for people to fix these robots when they breakdown; that is until a robot can fix a robot. This means there will be a huge demand for trained system and technology professionals, opening the door for a new type of skilled workforce; those in the information technologies field.

Is AI Worth It?

There are those who feel that AI is not worth the hassle, yet others who feel that only computers can bring us to the next phase of humanity. Since we don’t know the extent of how far the human brain can react, but we do know that it is limited, the focus is on getting computers to do the work that people cannot. After all, can you compute the solution to 1,789^75? Maybe it’ll take a few hours and reams of paper. However, a computer can do a computation such as this in just second. Technology can advance all aspects of life quickly and efficiently. For the last several decades this has been proven to be true and we will only see further advances as time moves on.
The one area that we continue to question, however, is can computers react to emotional situations, rather than just intellectual ones, and is this good or bad?
Humans are emotional creatures. We mourn the loss of life, just as we celebrate it. We feel pain and have adapted the way we function based on these experiences. Humans understand joy and will make future decisions based on the happiness or hurt they felt in past situations. Robots and computers cannot feel emotions. They can learn from experiences, such as you cannot walk through a wall, and that you must walk around obstacles, but they cannot feel sensation, hurt, or pride. How will this impact life? Will the future be based on mechanical decision making? These are questions that still need to be answered as technology improves.
Even bigger, computers cannot reproduce. Without people, the human race will parish. This surely cannot be the goal, why would we want to make ourselves obsolete, so scientists must find a balance with how robots and humans will interact in this world, and beyond.  

IT in the Future

Information Technologies will always have a place in the scientific world. Without information technologies, artificial intelligence cannot improve and expand. Since artificial intelligence is already being developed and modified, IT will advance and be modified, as well. In fact, employment of computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. From web designers to computer programmers to research scientists, this growing field will continue to expand as each decade passes. The place of AI in IT is a fluid one, but necessary all the same.
